The analysis undertaken at ESPA Research represents the culmination of over 15 years of peer-reviewed published research attempting to identify and examine the role of various urinary compounds. At present we have a 2-stage system for urinary analysis. First, the collection of background information about participants using a specially designed questionnaire. Second, the collection of a urine sample for biochemical analysis. Both questionnaire and tube are only available by contacting ESPA Research.
Continuing studies show that the pattern of urinary profiles can differ from individual to individual, and group to group. We have previously described characteristic differences in the profiles obtained from people with for example differing diagnoses (e.g. classical autism, Asperger syndrome, etc) or differing severity of problems. There are also early indications that other factors may also influence the results (e.g. problems at birth, history of viral infections). To take these factors into account, we rely on background information given in the questionnaire, which in the majority of cases enables us to interpret any obscure results. Please note all details taken from the questionnaire are subject to the strictest confidence, and are entered on to our research database (access to the database is by authorised personnel only).
Alongside the questionnaire, a urinary test kit is issued containing: (a) a 30 ml plastic tube in protective container (with preservative), and (b) instructions for the collection of the urine sample.
The results provided following analysis contain several pieces of information with regards to whether the compounds of interest have been detected. Based on these results recommendations are suggested on the possible efficacy of dietary intervention. An example urinary report with additional guidance can be downloaded below. Any decision to act upon these results must reside entirely with the person with autism and/or their parents or carers. The involvement of a medical physician and registered dietitian / nutritonist is strongly recommended before any dietary trial.
